The history of cocktails: Gin Sour
The Sour is one of the oldest cocktails around. Probably it is the starting point of the mixology. Jerry Thomas was the first one to write it down. The original sour cocktail recipe is based on a simple equilibrium: a sweet part (usually sugar syrup), a more bitter part given by lime or lemon juice and of course a distillate that gives character to the mix.The most used spirits are usually rhum (Daiquiri), bourbon, vodka and gin. The name Gin Sour, which refers to the sour taste of lemon, is misleading. Actually, this cocktail is a perfectly balanced mix of the sugar sweetness, the lemon sour and the dry taste of gin.
